Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland around 1818, though he never knew his exact birthday, choosing to celebrate on February 14th. As a young boy, he was separated from his mother and lived with his grandmother. Even though it was against the law to teach enslaved people to read, Frederick was determined to learn. He secretly taught himself by tricking white children into giving him lessons and by observing others. This secret learning was a superpower that helped him understand the world and dream of a different life. At about 20 years old, Frederick bravely escaped slavery by disguising himself as a sailor and traveling north to freedom. Once free, Frederick changed his last name to Douglass and became an amazing speaker and writer. He shared his powerful story of being enslaved, which helped many people understand how unfair slavery was. He even wrote a bestselling book about his life called "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave." Frederick didn't just fight against slavery; he also believed that all people, including women, should have equal rights. He started his own newspaper, The North Star, to spread messages of freedom and justice far and wide. His courage and intelligence made him a hero who advised presidents and inspired countless others to work for a better world.
